Technique x Fitness Aspirations

Technique Health & Fitness has been supporting Phil Roberton’s Fitness Aspirations and his runners for over three years as they prepare for the big day. This collaboration helps participants stay injury-free, recover effectively, and when the inevitable aches and pains of repetitive running catches up to them (no pun intended), we step in to address discomfort, structure their runs, and develop plans to get them to the starting line

Marathon training is demanding, requiring consistency and careful planning to prevent overuse injuries.

Through our partnership, we bring expertise in physiotherapy and sports science to support runners at all levels, whether they are first-time participants or seasoned marathoners.

How We Support Marathon Runners

1. Getting to Know Each Runner:

First things first, we assess each runner to understand their individual needs discussing their training history and goals.

Our initial assessments included strength, endurance capacity and flexibility tests via the benchmark system. This helps us build plans that are tailored to each individual person, rather than follow a one size fits all approach.

2. Video drop-ins:

Life can get hectic, especially for people balancing work, life, and marathon training. That’s why we offered video consultations. These virtual check-ins allowed runners to ask questions, share updates, and tweak their training plans—all from the comfort of their homes. It also meant we could keep them motivated and on track no matter where they were.

3. Knowledge is Power:

We know that the best way to prevent injuries is to educate runners about their bodies and how to take care of them.

Thus, we created a library of resources just for them. From videos on warm-up routines to guides on exercise protocols during the preparation phase, we covered it all. These resources were created to be practical, easy to follow, and effective at keeping the overall foundations covered.

4. Hands-On Help

Sometimes, nothing compares to the benefits of a sports massage. Whether the aim is to maintain muscle health, addressing tightness, or easing soreness, we provide soft tissue release and manual therapy to help prepare joints and muscles for the next run.

These treatments help decrease tension, improve circulation, and promote faster recovery.

5. When Setbacks Happen:

Despite everyone’s best efforts, injuries do happen. But that’s okay—we were ready.

Over the course of the partnership, we helped runners recover from a range of injuries, including IT band syndrome, Achilles tendinopathy, stress fractures and much much more.

Our rehab plans are about getting them back on their feet safely and confidently, minimising downtime and preventing future issues.

Types of Injuries We See

Some of the most common injuries we have managed during this partnership including:

  • Shin Splints: Often caused by overuse or improper footwear.

  • Plantar heel pain: That nagging foot pain so many runners are familiar with.

  • IT Band Syndrome: Pain along the outer knee, especially common in long-distance runners.

  • Achilles Tendinopathy: Tightness and pain in the back of the ankle.

  • Stress Fractures: Small cracks in the bone from repetitive impact.

Notable Outcomes Here’s what we’re especially proud of:

  • Improved Performance: Many runners told us they felt stronger, faster, and more prepared for race day after following our guidance.

  • Fewer Injuries: Thanks to our preventative approach, we saw a noticeable reduction in injury rates among participants.

I came to technique via a recommendation from Phul Roberton of Fitness Aspirations who suggested that they would be able to help me stay injury free for the London marathon.

“I have a spinal fusion and was experiencing pain after training, but after a few weeks of working with the Technique team I was able to train and run with much less pain overall.

“In the three months that we worked together, we developed and evolved a programme of activities which I still do daily over 12 months later.
