Physiotherapy is a science-based healthcare profession that aims to restore movement and function within the body.

It focuses on stretching, strengthening, and mobilising the tissues, joints, and muscles to enable pain-free movement.

After an operation or injury, you may be referred to a physiotherapist to ‘re-train’ your body to restore it to its optimum function. Our physiotherapists may help with neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders.

Why a Technique Physiotherapist?? All our practitioners are appropriately accredited and hold their accreditation across several bodies. We ensure that they stay abreast of all the latest practice and guidelines. We will only ever provide you with evidence based services.

Physiotherapy - MSK Injury

What to expect

Technique Health and Fitness want to ensure a complete physiotherapy process to ensure effective recovery from injury.  This is based on the following:

Assessment

Firstly, our physio will assess you to understand the problem.

To do this, he / she will take a detailed account of your complaint, discuss any medical issues, and conduct a thorough physical analysis.

Diagnosis

From considering all the information in the assessment, the physio will then diagnose your condition.

Treatment Plan

From your diagnosis, your physio will put together a tailored treatment programme to improve your condition.

This will include exercises to work on at home.

Review

If necessary, the physio will review your recovery, as many times as necessary.

To objectively measure your recovery, in the first session the physio will record your baseline data to measure progress against.

Dry needling and physiotherapy

A number of our physiotherapists use dry needling as part of their practice. But what is dry needling and why could your condition benefit from this treatment?

What is dry needling and what are its benefits?

Dry needling is a treatment technique that uses thin needles to stimulate trigger points in the connective tissue surrounding muscles with the aim to help improve pain, stiffness and mobility. This in turn can serve as a form of injury treatment, injury prevention, sports performance enhancement and relaxation.

How does dry needling work?

When the needle is inserted into the body, it naturally generates an inflammatory response internally. This means that blood is directed into that area and with it, the “good” nutrients such as oxygen that help muscles recover, relax, and perform better. Similarly, if an injury is present, it helps remove any excess/waste material that is impacting recovery, pain, stiffness and mobility in a negative way. The prick sensation from the needle also stimulates the release of endorphins (your body’s homemade pain medication). Some feel its effects immediately after the first session while it takes others more than one session.

Who should use dry needling?

-Those who are dealing with an injury or ache: Dry needling can help as part of the treatment plan for most musculoskeletal conditions such as muscle strains/tears, back pain (disc/facet joint issues), tendinopathies, and most other joint or muscle related issues.

-Active/sporting population: Dry needling can minimize the risk of injury and enhance sports performance by allowing muscles and joints to move and feel as they should. Allow yourself to not have to miss training and feel great in the process.

-Those looking to relax: If you are someone that is caught up in the busy and stressful lifestyle of London and would like something to help you recover and unwind; dry needling is a tool that can help release tension off your muscles and make you feel refreshed.

Contraindications

The following is a list of certain instances when dry needling is not recommended or is contraindicated. This list is not exhaustive and if any doubts you should always consult the person doing the treatment prior to the session.

-Those who are pregnant, particularly in the first 3 months of pregnancy

-Those who are unable to provide consent

-Those who have compromised immune systems

-Those who have very recently had surgery

-Those who have bleeding disorders, hemophilia, are on heavy dose of blood thiners

prevention and/or relaxation- Those looking to minimize the risk of injury. Particularly those who enjoy being active and would benefit from a little extra “help” to aid in the recovery of their muscles and joints will greatly benefit from this.

Dry needling vs Acupuncture

Dry needling isn’t the same as acupuncture. Both procedures involve penetrating your skin with the same type of needles but acupuncture is based in Eastern medicine, while dry needling is based in Western medicine. Dry needling is based on the evaluation of pain patterns, postures, faulty movement patterns and orthopaedic testing while acupuncture is based on energy and “meridian points” that correspond to different parts of your body.

The problem was accurately diagnosed through an MRI scan, which revealed a rotator cuff tear.
Technique has restored my movement and eliminated pain.

Whilst I will never have complete mobility, my shoulder movement is much less restricted. Its a huge improvement from when we started.”
