What is Shockwave Therapy?
1. Mechanism of Action: Shockwave therapy, also known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), works by delivering high-energy acoustic waves to the affected area. These waves create microtrauma in the tissue, which stimulates the body's natural healing response. This can lead to increased blood flow, tissue regeneration, and the release of growth factors, which may aid in the healing process.
2. Conditions Treated: Shockwave therapy is typically used to treat certain musculoskeletal conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, calcific shoulder tendinopathy, and some forms of chronic pain. It's not a one-size-fits-all solution and may not be appropriate for every type of injury or condition.
3. Appropriateness: Whether or not shockwave therapy is an appropriate escalation in treatment depends on the specific injury or condition, as well as the individual patient. Our team will assess your appropriateness for this treatment like your medical history, the nature and severity of your injury, and your overall health.
4. Effectiveness: While shockwave therapy can be beneficial for certain conditions, its effectiveness varies from person to person. Some individuals may experience significant pain relief and improved healing, while others may not respond as well to the treatment.
5. Risks and Side Effects: Like any medical procedure, shockwave therapy carries some risks and potential side effects, including pain during treatment, bruising, swelling, and in rare cases, tissue damage. These should be discussed with you before undergoing treatment.
6. Complementary Treatment: Shockwave therapy is often used in conjunction with other physiotherapy or rehabilitation techniques. It may not replace traditional physiotherapy but can be a part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
