The Invictus Games: A Testament to Human Spirit and Resilience
At Technique, we are constantly inspired by the strength, determination, and perseverance of our patients. But Few events embody these qualities as profoundly as the Invictus Games — an international showcase of courage and recovery for wounded, injured, and sick personnel and veterans from the military.
The word "Invictus" means "unconquered," and these games live up to that name in every way. Founded in 2014 by Prince Harry, the Invictus Games are becoming more than just an event. Every two years the gathering of every nation's hero reminds us that no matter how big the challenges may seem, the human spirit is capable of overcoming adversity and emerging stronger.
Who Participate?
For participants, the games represent the culmination of months—sometimes years—of hard work & healing. The athletes include people who have faced unimaginable physical injuries, like limb loss or spinal cord damage, as well as psychological scars, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Despite these challenges, they defy the odds to compete in sports like
Wheelchair rugby
Cycling
Swimming
Sitting volleyball
Their stories are a source of inspiration, not only for the military but for everyone. They teach us that setbacks do not define us; how we respond to them does.

Physiotherapy For Invictus Athletes
As physiotherapists, we are particularly moved by the role of rehabilitation in these journeys. Sports are powerful strategies in recovery—both physically and mentally.
The Invictus Games emphasise the importance of this in rebuilding strength, regaining confidence, and rediscovering a purpose.
Moreover, the games create a community of understanding - athletes bond over shared experiences, celebrating each other’s victories and encouraging one another in the face of challenges.
Physiotherapy can be a lifeline for wounded veterans, helping them overcome the physical and psychological challenges they face after serving.
This is how we help:
Restoring Mobility and Strength:
Tailored programs improve range of motion, strengthen muscles, and rebuild coordination.
Veterans with amputations receive gait and balance training to adapt to prosthetics and regain confidence in movement
Managing Chronic Pain:
Techniques like manual therapy, stretching, and electrotherapy help decrease persistent pain.
Physiotherapists reduce reliance on medication by addressing the root causes of pain
Rehabilitation for Neurological Injuries:
For veterans with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) or nerve damage, physiotherapy focuses on retraining motor skills and restoring functional movement.
Mental Health:
Physical activity releases endorphins, easing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Progress in therapy helps build confidence and a sense of accomplishment
